Purple

My several small goods are purple. This folding fan, called "sense" and the poach are my favorite. I bought them in Kyoto in my college days with the aim of practicing tea ceremonies with these goods.

In old time, the root of murasaki plant is used to extract the pigment of purple . Since the amount of pigment taken from murasaki plant is very limited, it required people to die a lot of times. Since because it is laborious, only the nobility could wear purple.

It is interesting that the color purple are often used to show high class status in different cultures, such as in the Roman Empire. How about is it in your country?

私の小物のいくつかは紫です。これは大学生の時に京都でお茶席用に買った、扇子とふくさ入れです。

昔、紫はムラサキという植物の根から取り出される染料で染められいたようですが、
ムラサキから取れる染料は少量のため、何度も繰り返し染める必要があったそうです。
紫色に染めるのは手間がかかったため、高貴な人しか紫を身につけることができなかったようです。

また、ローマ帝国でも、紫は社会的身分の高さを示すものだったそうですよ。面白いですね＾＾
