Ojizou- san (お地蔵さん）

Last day, one of our guests from U.S.A asked a question "What is this?" showing pictures like the picture below. 

Of course, I knew what it is, it is "Ojizou-san" but I didn't know why it sits everywhere in Japan. Ojizou-san is so near to me and I have never thought of why it is siting for.

He also asked me why they are wearing some clothes. I have never thought of it before. I just realized some people change the clothes in the grave field that I go every time I went back my home town.

Here is the outcome of my research.

Ojizou-san is related to Buddhism and is guardian of children who died before their parents. In Japanese mythology, it is said that the souls of children died before their parents have difficulty on they way to the afterlife because they have not have enough good deeds and because their parents suffered from their death. Ojizou-san will help the children to safely go to the afterlife. Therefore, some of the ojizou-san is placed where the children died, such as getting accidents.

The parents think of ojizou-san as their child and make them wear apron and give toys. It is is said that if you closely look at the face of ojizou-san, the expression is similar to one of children.

昨日お迎えした、アメリカ人の方から、お地蔵さんの写真を見せながら、これは何？と聞かれました。
もちろん、これがお地蔵さんであることは知っていまいましたが、身近すぎて一体何のために置かれているのか、考えたことがありませんでした。

さらに、どうしてこんな服を来ているの？とも。確かに、そんな事考えたこともなく・・・実家に帰る度に行くお墓で、お地蔵さんの服が定期的に変わっているのには気がついていましたが、何のためか、考えたことがありませんでした。

早速調べたところ、これは仏教に関与しており、親より先に亡くなった子供を供養するためのものだそうです。日本の仏教では、親より先に死んだ子供は、何も徳を積んでいないことと、親を悲しませたことから、三途の川を渡ることができないそうです。お地蔵さんがその子供が無事に三途の川を渡れるよう手助けをするのだと考えられています。そのため、お地蔵さんは事故など、子供が亡くなった場所にたてられているのだそうです。

だから、親はお地蔵さんを子供のように思い、前掛けを付けたりおもちゃをお供えするのですね。

お地蔵さんの意味がわかってスッキリしました。お地蔵さんには、いつも何となくお参りをしていましたが、ちゃんと背景を思いつつ、お参りができそうです。
