Toconoma Alcove 床の間

Toconoma is an elevated alcove in a traditional Japanese reception room, where traditional arts such as flower arrangement wall scrolls are displayed. 

床の間は客人用の部屋にあつらえられる、少し床から高く、奥まった空間のことですね。伝統的な芸術品、生け花や掛け軸が飾られます。

I've found these traditional arts in a banquet room of Japanese restaurant; beautifully arranged hydrangea and flower arrangement with fancy vase. 

紫陽花が美しく生けられた生け花や、少し凝った花瓶に入れられたお花。これらは料亭の宴会室で見つけたものです。

I've found tokonoma in a Japanese-style confectionary store as well. When I bought a souvenir, they offered us to have a cup of tea with sweets at the space while they are packing the souvenir. I was very impressed with the kindness of the shop and beautiful tokonoma.

和菓子屋さんでも床の間を見つけました。お土産を買った時、梱包するので、休憩室でお茶とお菓子を食べるよう進めてくれたのです。お店の方の親切さととても奇麗な床の間が奥にありとても驚きました。

Toconoma is seen almost everywhere in Japan.
I came to love room with alcove because alcove is dedicated to enjoy the customer and I can feel the Japanese hospitality of the host.
床の間は日本のどこでも見る事ができます。
最近はとても床の間を見るのが好きになってきました。というのは、床の間は客人をもてなすことに専念しており、日本人のホスピタリティ−精神を垣間みることができるからです。
身近なもので、ついつい在り来たりのものだと思いがちですが、生け花の季節のお花や掛け軸の言葉の意味など、じっくり見てみると面白いと思います。
